it's not turning it into a block. You are using associative hatching.
Select the hatch, bring up the properties dialog ~ you should see something like All (25) or whatever number at the top of the dialog. If you expand the drop down you will see that it then says Hatch (1) and also lists the other entities making up the hatch boundary. Select the one you wish to modify

I am having the same problem and have always used "associative" hatch for all drawings so that the hatch will also update with any changes made around the hatch. I thought there was a way in your options to change this "blocking" format of hatch so you could still use "associative" hatch but not create a block of everything the hatch is inside? Any ideas?

Assuming your hatch is on a separate layer, freeze that layer then LIst one of the objects you suspect has been converted to a block. Bet it ain't.

On mine, I had wall lines on one layer and was putting my hatch on a pattern layer. When I filled the wall lines with the hatch, my wall lines became a block with the hatch and when I selected it after hatching it and looked up at the layer properties, there was no layer showing (as if I had selected multiple lines on different layers).
I forwarded an example to a friend of mine that had a rectangle hatched where it turned everything into a block and one that was filled with a non associative hatch, and she was still able to click on the rectangle separate from the hatch on both examples which leads me to believe it's in my settings somewhere.
It's baffling me so I am just hatching as "non-associative" for now, which is really no good because if I change a wall line around that "non-associative" hatch, it will not update with my change. I think it must be something in the other options or settings somewhere that I must have changed myself and not realized it (especially after sending it to someone and they were still able to select them as different entities).
Still working at figuring it out too but it's good to hear other ideas!!! Thx!

It's a good thing I didn't put any money on my bet!
I run '02 and the only goofy thing about hatching that I've encountered was a hatch that went from associated to disassociated when I changed the color of the layer it was on. The final conclusion on this was a questionable hatch definition. When I changed to another hatch pattern (same pattern from another source), the problem went away. :o
Go figure.....
Do you have any add-on programs or lisp routines running? Might be a gremlin in there if you do.
Although I hatch walls to differentiate materials, I try to limit the extent of area hatching to minimize editing and rehatching. For example, on a simple rectangular plan with CMU walls, I will hatch each wall rather than try to hatch all four. Over the years, I've found it to be less futzing around if revisions are necessary.
I have an extensive library of building component blocks I use for wall sections. They all have hatch patterns built in mainly because I detest trying to hatch wall sections. Having them built into each block saves much time.
Hope you (or someone on this forum) can help solve your problem. Haven't a clue myself
Cheers! :)

I think there is something called Express Tools or something in here and it could very well be a part of the problem. It adds a lot more menu options so I could have very well done something in there that has affected my standard hatch settings. :?
Anyway, if I do ever figure it out, I will post it so maybe one day down the road, I could help someone else. Thanks for all of your advice!!!

Like Hendie said.

Then you can edit one or the other. And if you pick HATCH (1) you can remove the associative hatch.
