Erasing segment or part of line without `breaking` first?

Is there a way or variable to erase command which allows part selection of line to erase rather than all of line ( this may be a selection issue )without having to break line first? i.e if a line crosses a perpendicular line can a part of original line be selected on either side of croosing line be selected separately?

another options is the lengthen command ... but to answer part of query ... NO you can't select part of a line or one side if crosses another line ... you would need to break the line...

But give either the grip editing mentioned by Hendie or use the lengthen command
