VCD, I'm thinking you may know the answer to this, but if anyone else knows, please let me know.

I was trying to run quantities on a couple areas that we're needing to add fill to. I had the existing surface from the survey department, then I created my new surfaces based on my new contours. after doing the 3 comparisons that I needed for cut & fill, I went to open the report so I could print it out & give my engineer his quantities, but when I tried to open the report in notepad, I got some silly error on my command line (I don't remember what it was since I'm not at work today), then notepad opened, but it had all this garbled crap & symbols, which would NOT have been my quantities! :x I'm trying to figure out what may be causing me to get some error instead of my quantity report.........any ideas from y'all? If you need to know the error, let me know & I'll re-create it tomorrow when I get back to work.

I forget are you using Land Desktop? and what version?

A Couple questions.

Do you have any bad triangles in your surface that might be hitting zero elevation? (this wont be a big deal if the project is within 100' of sea level.

Did you try to make cut fill grid ticks? If you did were you successful, and what was the grid accuracy?

Is the existing surface smaller in area than proposed surface?

Does the proposed surface area branch out side of the existing surface area?

Morning!!!!!!!

I forget are you using Land Desktop? and what version?
yes, 2004

Do you have any bad triangles in your surface that might be hitting zero elevation?
nope

Did you try to make cut fill grid ticks? If you did were you successful, and what was the grid accuracy?
ok, you lost me on that one, not sure what you're asking -

Is the existing surface smaller in area than proposed surface?
nope, should be the same for the most part

Does the proposed surface area branch out side of the existing surface area?
nope

got a solution for me yet? :? although, "ashtray" did bring me some changes this morning, which I'm working on now, so when I get the error again, I'll try to remember to post what it said.

I may have found a solution.......
I THINK, that since I had 2 different areas to create with 2 separate surfaces, but only 1 existing surface, it was trying to write the quantity output files on top of each other, therefore giving me the error. I just had to redo the quantities on the one area since I got new contours, so I renamed that first output file as "old", then it just gave me my NEW quantities for that area!
:|
I guess that brings me to another question, why don't I get the option to name the report that I'm generating to match what my surface name is?????? :?

I got to be honest T, I've only done one or two grading cut fill surface stratums this year... so I'm pretty rusty...

The three surfaces probably were causing your error, because of stratum conflicts.

Also, I thought that the reports’ were named after their stratum. Maybe not?

FYI; Cut/Fill Ticks are a graphic representation (A number with a + or -) of the cut or fill difference (on a grid) that LDD will insert into the drawing... It’s a handy tool if you want to see where your site has issues while trying to balance dirt volumes.
Found under Grading->Grid Volumes->Grid Volume Ticks...

that's ok - this is the first one I've had to do in about 5 yrs! I started to remember the steps as I was being walked through them, not to mention the last time I did qty's was on R14, so it's SLOOOOOOOOOWLY coming back to me.

nope, it just called the report "output"..........nothing to do with the names I'd given the stratums or surfaces........

I think I'll try that next time!

thanks!
