overlaying dxf layers

Help! I'm new and have multiple dxf layers. I want to put them all together (i.e. "overlay" them) How do I do this? Should I convert them to DXG and then do something..? Am I asking this queston incorrectly and/or just showing my ignorance?

P.S. I come from a GIS backround and am trying to send the data we've created in a GIS (ARCVIEW) to someone who uses AUTOCAD.

open the xref drawing itself ....
rename the layers ...
attach it again ...
