highlight/drag image missing

I have been working with 2004 for a while but suddenly last week I no longer get a drag image (highlight of original object location) when I rotate / move an object or text. The line/text just disappears and reappears in the moved location, which makes "by eye" rotations impossible. Has anyone encountered this and knows how to fix it?
I have rebooted / reopened program and all my PICK (pickstyle etc) are set to 1.
