View Full Version : Layout Control

I may be missing something but I am unable to lock layers on and off in layouts in such a manner that merely by selecting a specific layout I will have only the layers turned on for that drawing.
I have tried all ways but each time that I turn a layer off in one layout it gets turned off in all the others. This can be very expensive when the incorrect drawings are issued for contracts and essential information is missing from the plotted drawings.

You need to "activate" the viewport You want to "turn Off" layers in ....

While this veiwport is active, go to the "pull down" and skroll down to the layer name you wish to "Freeze".

Now just "click" the "SNOWFLAKE W/ THE SQUARE" around it ....

This will freeze the layer only in that active viewport.

Hope that helps.

You can freeze/thaw a layer for every viewport you make !!
I dont know you can do it for each layout !

What you could do, is make a layer filter for each layout. But watch out .. everytime you create a new layer you should redefine the layer filters.

Thanks for your quick response.
I will give it a whirl and see what happens.

ps My apologies if this message didn't get attached with my first reply. I am suffering from newuseritis.

Thanks to those gents who suggested that I could turn off layers in layouts by selecting the viewport and then selecting the window, also as an option using filters.

Unfortunately, try as I might, neither option had the desired effect.
I would like to know if there is anyone else out there who would find it handy to automatically select layers with each layout.
I have to admit that there are a lot of facilities within autocad that I and my colleagues do not find particularly useful but controlling layers in layouts would be a fabulous time (and grief) saver. I have raised this as an addition to the autocad wish list in the past but the reply I got from autodesk suggested that they weren't grasping the problem. I'm sure that there are some brilliant programmers out there who could sort this out in a jiffy. How are you fixed for a little challenge ?

as you know you can freeze a layer by layout.
now freeze all layers in a layout that you dont want to see.
Now make the filter layer a name.
Each time you go there, you just have to activate the filter.
You can do that automaticly in VBA

Thanks Yossa
Your suggestion works a treat.
I have now started studying VBA.
Thanks a bunch.
We are in an unfortunate position, here, of having several different versions of Autocad and unfortunately this little facility in the Layer Manager is only available on the latest upgrades that we have.

Never mind.

Since you are obviously in the genius category I have another little problem you might be able to assist with.

I have created a site services drawing which I am attaching details of all our buried services.
One of them is the gas main.
I originally attached the 'gas' linetype on my drawing and it worked a treat and was excellent when printed on our HP plotter.
Unfortunately when I next reopened the drawing the text saying GAS is now massive.
If I try to reduce it using ltscale it just disappears altogether.
This is something I have never come across in many years of autocad use so I was wondering if it was a programme fault , however when I open the drawing in another version of autocad the effect is the same.

Besides being a bit weird it has wasted several hours trying to get to the bottom of the problem.

Any ideas ?

If it isn't the "LTSCALE" :?: , then try "STYLE".

Type ... Style
enter key
(And see if you can find the text style for the GAS linetype. A text height might of been enter somehow.)

That's all I got. :?
