I've been given the task of training one of the guys I work with on how to use the CAD! He is quite old and the saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" springs to mind!
To be honest he's done really but just can’t quite grasp the fact that you need to save your work on a regular basis which has caused quite a large amount of work to be lost in the past!
What I want to do is set his computer up to do an autosave every five minutes so if anything happens I can recover his work and I want the save to remain even if the cad crashes.
I know the cad has its own autosave but I cant seem to find the save files! particularly if the CAD crashes.
Any help anyone could give me would be appreciated!

Hi,
you have a *.bak.file in the same folder, where the *.dwg is.
If AC crashes You will get an autosave-file (*.sv$) in "C:\TEMP\" (SV "SAVEFILEPATH")

Hey haggis: Being an "old" guy myself who learned a few new tricks, I have written a series of short papers dealing with "Pencil and Paper" mentality. If you would like for me to send you some of them, it might help him with the transition. Nothing too technical in them; more philosophy geared to changing one's thinking processes from pencil and paper to pointing device and monitor.
Let me know via this forum or PM if you would like them e-mailed.
Welcome to the forum, BTW....

Messaging shorthand for "By The way", that's all.

Thanks CSIArch,
I appologise, maybe I worded my question a bit wrong when I wrote it! He's a more mature student, I was a little upset about the entire days work that was lost when I wrote it!
I've mentioned your notes to him and he's interesed to see your views on converting from the board to the computer! I'd appreciate it if you would email me a copy. I'll PM you my address!
As far as my problem goes that doesn't really solve it exxit!
The *.BAK file is only a backup of your drawing file previous to the last time that you saved it so that if you alter anything up wrong you can revert to an earlier save!
The auto save file *.SV$ is supposed to save every four minutes in a temp directory and is also supposed to create a save if the CAD crashes but if I've searched my computer I cant find an SV$ file on it anywhere! I have also tried looking for *.AC$ files because I think this was the file extension type in previous versions of CAD.
I dont suppose you have any other Ideas?
Thank, Haggis
PS... Ben, BTW is By the way.

Exxit,
I've figured out what you mean about the SV$ files! because I'm using Windows XP it hid them in some silly directory
C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Local Settings\Temp
I understand what you mean now! If the CAD crashes, there will be an atuomatic *.SV$ File in here!
The problem is, if you have a drawing open and exit without saving by accident, the SV$ file disappears! What I want is to have an autosave every say 10 mins that overrights itself but remains for a period of time after the drawing closes.
Thanks for any help!

To make your life easier, this is where you change the auto save path.
