To anyone who is will to take on the challenge of the software.
This is a questions generated by our resident PE.

In AutoCad LDD, I usually have (1)existing contour file, (2)base linework file, (3)proposed 3D terrain linework for proposed work all in separate files.
That way, when I am doing the proposed 3D terrain linework, I will XREF the existing contour and base linework file. By doing this, I won't
accidentally mess up the existing contour file, or base linework. Any existing surface and alignments that are created in these two files (1)&(2), when
XREF, will be available to me in the (3)proposed 3D terrain linework file. I can do my profiles, earthwork, 3D street design all in (3).

Thanks

OK I think I followed that, but what is your question?

I believe civil3d usually has everything in one file, and certain info can be exported and imported as needed. Not sure this is true, but if so you could still have existing contours, etc on separate layers but lock the layers so you will not accidentally edit them.
