View Full Version : Converting DXF file to AC2010 - Lost or never had solid fill lines - Cross-post

I purchased the book entitled Key Buildings of the Twentieth Century by Richard Weston. Along with the book is a CD that includes DXF files of the building plans and elevations. The book describes the method to recovering the lines that have solid fill in this way: The generic “.dxf” file format does not support ‘solid fill’ utilized by many architectural CAD programs. All the information is embedded within the file and can be reinstated within supporting CAD programs. Select the polygon required, and change the “attributes” to ‘Solid’, the color information should be retrieved. To reinstate the ‘Walls’; select all the objects within the ‘Walls’ layer/class and amend their ‘Attributes’ to ‘Solid’.
Is this giberish? Or, does any of this make sense to you?

I have asked a few people that I know who use AutoCAD regularly, and they say that these instructions make no sense. I am very new to AC2010 and have not used any version of AC for about 5 years. So, I am the wrong person to ask, but it seems the lines I am looking for (they do not appear at all after importing the file into AC) are not in the file. Yes plenty of other lines, but the thick solid black lines of significant elements of the drawing are not visible.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks,

Sorry no-one answered when you posted this before.

The instructions in the book seem to have been written in an attempt to cover as many different CAD programmes as possible. Thus they will problaby not make sense in most of them.

So,
You say you are 'importing' a .dxf file in Autocad and some lines are not coming in?

How are you 'importing' it? (You should just be able to OPEN it).

Have you checked that all the layers are turned on and not frozen?

Are you sure that the lines have actually been saved in the .dxf file?

What programme was used to create the .dxf?

Yes, I simply opened it. All layers were turned on and none were frozen. No way to be sure the lines were actually there. I emailed a query to the book publisher who had to forward it to the author in England several days ago. I am still waiting for a meaningful reply.
I do see evidence of two blocks on the wall layer, but no lines are visible in that block. The line weight was 0 but I tried to widen it, and still nothing becomes visible. When I turn off all the layers except the wall layer, I see nothing.

Have you tried exploding the blocks to see what happens?
They may just be empty block definitions.
