drawing right of ways

Situation: I have several alignments, a couple are simple (1 curve, and 1 line), and one is complex (made up of several curves and lines). I have no problem using the offset command on my centreline to create my row's for the simple alignments, but I can't seem to do it for the more complex one. The message I get says "can't offset that object"
Question: What gives??

Maybe your offset distance is greater than the radius of one or more of the arcs.

what is a curve? ACAD has arcs and splines. A spline can causes this offset problem, sometimes.

Or you are working with high coords.
