This might be a surprise to most but I'm against 3D models for "Construction Documents" for architects.
My boss the other day asked me my views on this issue.
And i told him the following:
I've been formally trained on Softdesk's Auto Architect; Bentley TriForma, AutoDesk's Revit; and even Microstations 3D tools
For engineers running cable trays and pipes and conduits and other items which in plan give no clue to elevation each is at...
3D modeling is the BEST! it solves many clashing problems....
But that's for Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, industrial, process and maybe structural.
But for architects...
We become the CAD natzis... the gatekeeper for the base model... which really brings no benefit to the architect...
The 3D model... allows engineers to finally do their work they neglect to do in 2D.
with modeling...
the CAD modeler models actual pipes in real dimensions...
and allows the engineers to see if a chase needs to grow or another shaft needs to allocated for runs...
Then they call on the architect to model a chase or grow a chase....
And that's our role...
in terms of animation and renderings....
all that is done at the beginning of the job to get the job...
No model is need to make cuts...
Its 2D plan on screen no matter what to us...
Our project man hours double or triple for the added role....
Not to mention the tweaking... we have to do to make the plans read like a normal 2D plan... with hatches...
A bunch of retarded libraries to maintain and CREATE....
For what...????
I mean if a company has been in business for more than 6 years...
They have a library of details and hatches...
And they need to start from scratch...
My final thoughts to my boss....
Dont do it... it doesnt save time... it kills time.... and adds so many hours to the project.
And I would know....
I'm usually picked to manage & police the whole CAD server for the project.
and that sux...
Anyway...
Any thoughts...
or am i hearing crickets rub their legs,,, LOL
