When I hatch an object the hatch becomes a part of the whole object. I want the hatch to be just its own entity. any ideas?

Turn off ASSOCIATIVE HATCH in the Options.

No its not that. When I hatch an object the hatch should have one grip. but what is happening is that when I hatch something, everything that the hatch is touching becomes a block or something. Its not the associatve property. thanks though, any other sugjests

What you describe DOES sound like Hatch association - if you select an associative hatch then all the lines etc that form the hatch boundry are also selected at the same time.
To stop this happening to an existing hatch use HATCHEDIT to dissacociate it.
Next time you select the hatch then ONLY the hatch pattern is selected and NOT the boundry as well.

Maybe your "pickstyle" setting
0 No group selection or associative hatch selection
1 Group selection
2 Associative hatch selection
3 Group selection and associative hatch selection
