I have installed TruView 2009.
I try to open an Acad2000 dwg file and get the "Unable to open drawing. Contains incorrect or corrupted information. Use recover...".
The file opens with no problem in 2000. Do audit and finds no errors (including x-refs).
DWG TrueView opens other drawings (although without xrefs).
I did a repair on the installation, to no avail. Going to do a reinstall, but not holding out for any improvement.
Why doesn't it open the file?
Does it not want to open xrefs?
Is it the older version of dwg?
I thought it was a glorified viewer that would open any AutoCAD file.

Have a read through THIS (http://discussion.autodesk.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=653533) thread over at the Autodesk Discussion Groups. This appears to be a common problem with the 2009 products. The audit/error detection has been beefed up in 2009, so if it finds even the slightest error it will bomb out and refuse to open the file.
Have you run an Audit on the xrefs? The main file may be fine, but the xrefs may have corruption.

I did a recover with AutoCAD 2009, it found no errors and opened the file. Auditing the file (and xrefs) in 2000 did not find any errors either.
We have not made the switch yet from the older version (2000).
All I want to do is use TrueView to view drawings for reference while working on another drawing. Sometimes I need to leave them open and I don't want to open another session of AutoCAD to view as this doesn't allow autosaves unless they are written to a different location (as well as with temporary files).
Also, this doesn't do any good for someone which doesn't have AutoCAD that we have told to use TrueView to view our drawings.

Anything 2008 or above is pure EVIL. I just got forced in to an upgrade, in the last week. Already I've seen Problems with older DXF files, some of my DXF files go back to R9 Dos

I often "try" to convert 2009 drawings down to 2004 with True View. I'd say more than 50% of the time it doesn't work. The converted drawing is completely useless and crashes CAD every time it's open. The failure has something to do objects created by Civil 3D. The only way I get the drawing to open is if the sender explodes everything in the drawing first.

I have no problems opening 2000 drawings with DTV2008; see if you can find a copy of that.
I will have a look to see if I still have the installation .exe for it.
As Plotter Guy says anything called 2009 when we are still in 2008 must have been rushed out before it has been fully debugged.
Edit-
Sorry I have not got the installer for DTV2008 here, I may have it at work but it could be a week or two before I get back there.
Can anyone else help deke with a 2008 version?

I have a 2005, 2006 & 2007 set-up on the network here. Even have a VoloView! That worked pretty well, although in a limited way.
Don't have a 2008. Must have missed that update.
Maybe I'll give one a try.

This is probably a bit late now but-
I have just installed TrueView2009, and as part of the installation process a readme file gave the following information-

Known Issues and Limitations

Opening Damaged Drawings
When opening a damaged drawing, a dialog box appears asking the user to fix the file with the Recover command. This command is not implemented in TrueView. Instead, use the Check and Fix option as follows:
1. Click the DWG Convert button.
2. Select the damaged file.
3. Click Conversion Setups.
4. Select “Standard” and click the New button
5. Name the new setup (e.g. Recover).
6. In the Modify Conversion Setup dialog box, set the Conversion package type to Folder (set of files).
Note- Do not select In-place (overwrite files) as this may result in conversion errors.
7. Select Check and fix errors and click OK.
With this new conversion setup you will be able to recover your drawings.

That sounds like it should work.
I had forgotten about this option, as I am not all that familiar with the software. Just needing it for conversions and the occasional viewing of a file.
Nest time with the problem, will give this a shot.
Thanks for the reply and info.

This worked for opening the drawing in TrueView.
It also found and repaired a bunch of errors that the R2000 did not.
Thanks again for this. I intend to try it on other messsed up files when they arise.

For the information of anyone else installing DWGTrueView 2009 I had problems with the installation.
The zip file downloaded and unzipped OK, but then the setup.exe kept reporting that there was not enough memory on the hard drive to install the program (even there was over 20GB free on the drive).
After 4 tries I eventually solved this by-
Saving the zip to disc rather than running it from the website.
Unzipping the files but not running setup.exe.
Right clicking on setup.exe and looking at it properties I found that it was shown as 'blocked' because it had come from another computer.
Clicked on the button to unblock it, closed the properties.
Ran setup.exe and it installed with no problems.
Hope this helps if someone else has the same problem.

I have also just installed DWGgateway on a machine running Acad 2000i on windows 98SE.
This has a slight problem after it is installed.
When you fire up Acad or try to use the gateway menu you gat an 'activation' form to fill in - this form has a problem with the ZIP CODE field, it will only accept numbers in this field not letters.
Just enter 123456 or similar and carry on.
Solidworks are aware of the problem and are trying to sort it out but for now entering just numbers works.
