Line Thickness

In a few of the drawings I have been working on I have had problems with the line thickness changing at random.

The lines appear about 5mm thick when they are actually much thinner. I have tried regenerating the drawing but this does not work. The only cure I have found is to change between model and paper space a few times or else open and close the drawing a few times.

Does anyone know why these lines are appearing with this thickness and if so do you know of a permenant solution to the problem? Is there a setting needs changed?

What you are viewing in model space is dynamic, what is in paper space is actual.
Try going to FORMAT>LINEWEIGHT.
In the dialogue box either untick 'DISPLAY LINEWEIGHT' or lower the 'ADJUST DISPLAY SCALE' value by moving the slider towards 'min'

Could it also be possible that the "LWT" button on the bottom tool bar is clicked on?

The LWT button will switch DISPLAY LINEWEIGHT on and off, but you can't adjust the display scale which needs to be done through the menu.
