View Full Version : Opening Files w/o .bak file extension

My problem:
When typing-in a drawing file to open, a window appears with possible selections. The more numbers that I type-in the fewer possible drawings to select from decreases. The computer tends to highlight the drawing number xxxxx.bak INSTEAD of xxxxx.dwg (obviously alphabetical). I could type in .dwg each time I open a file, but would rather not. :boohoo:
This gets annoying because I have to remove the ".bak" before hitting the enter key or it responds "Autocad message - Invalid filename".

In the past before reloading Autocad I never had this problem.

Does anyone know how to disable it from selecting the .bak files?

Something may be screwy in your set-up. If you open Autocad then elect to open a file, it's supposed to assume a file extension of .DWG which eliminates you problem. I don't know why it doesn't do this, unfortunately but you might want to check your user settings or file associations under windows preferences.

I believe this has something to do with MAXSORT.
Set it to 1000

hope that helps :D

I'm just old..... I still remember old problems in AutoCAD r14...
and solutions.... :p

I started in autoCAD r12 .... I'm just working my way up to ... 2007...
I'm stuck at 2005 .... ;)

But anyway....

:Welcome:

I guess I must have missed something in the OP's original question.

I double click on the R14 icon on the desk top. Up comes an opening display...the normal top task bar, etc.

I click File > Open > and I get a little dialogue box which displays a My Computer - type dialogue box which displays only folds AND drawings with a .DWG extension.

After reading the response from architech about MAXSORT. I check the setting in R14 and it is 200.

I swear I never changed a thing. The above described events are out-of-the-box generated. No custom settings, no tweaking....I'm just wondering what got changed so this guy's computer looks at "all files" instead of only .dwg files. I still suspect something besides MAXSORT value needs to be looked at but I don't have a clue as to what it might be....

You're right csiarch, it must be something else
I appologize architech!
I thought that it had worked, but didn't after all. :r_wtf:

I'll probably just re-install and see what happens.

dconley: Didn't mean to rain or your parade nor question architech's suggestion. It's just that sometimes this damned program just doesn't make any sense!

Some Suggestions and Questions...

Were there any custom settings added to your installation?

Were any of the standard options changed during installation?

Compare the settings on your maching versus another one where thins work properly.

After doing as much F1 research as possible, choose likely settings and options and change them one at a time, re-booting and starting up cadd each time if necessary for changes to take effect. IF you happen to trip across a solution, have it tatooed in a conspicuous place on your body for future reference.

Just some avenues to pursue...

I found out what the problem was.
I went to "Internet options" - "Advanced" - and unchecked "Use inline AutoComplete"
As simple as that.:thumbs_up
