I have a drawing file I would like to make "read only." I want other users to be able to do a save-as and use the titleblock but I don't want them to be able to make any changes to the file and overwrite the existing one.
Is this possible?
Thanks for any help.

You could make a template out of it...

I made a dwt file out of it but when I dbl click the template file and it opens into the drawing, I am still able to save (from the file menu). I had heard this would work before and tried it but it still doesn't seem to work how I want it to. But thanks anyway. Any other suggestions? :-)

It opens into a new drawing based on the template, if the user makes any changes it won't be on the template and on closing/saving the user will prompted for a file name and location.

make a block out of the file ...
Then mirror the block horizontally & vertically....
And back to normal....
I believe that should lock your design in 14.....
I believe that was a bug in 14....
Try it and let me know.:cup:

architech: 'splain to me the theory behind your "mirroring" post???? Curious....
Could the OP also WBLOCK his drawing out from model space, attach the image as an xref? Could he also go into windows properties and make the image file read only?
One also might ask why the OP wants to do this. might be other alternatives to offer if we knew the reason(s).

Thanks for the help everyone. Unfortunately I haven't had any success with getting this to work so I just decided to keep a copy locally that I could use to overwrite the shared version in case it gets changed. The problem is not so much the drawing itself, but rather the two versions of AutoCAD we're using. If someone opens it up in the wrong version it loads all these other proxies and junk in there that I don't want. Then if they save it that proxy dialog box pops up every time I open the file in R14. I though maybe write protection would help me avoid that. I think I found a way around it though.
Thanks again!
